On this first Sunday of Lent the Liturgy of the Word give us a very important message; the first words of Jesus after he spent 40 days in the desert, after he was tempted by the devil and conquered him: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news”. The Lord is calling us to repent of our sins, to look in to our hearts and see that many times we are unjust with God, with our brothers and sisters and with our selves. We are unjust to God when we take his place and put God in a corner in our daily lives, when we make ourselves gods and try to control everything according to our own desires, we are unjust to our brothers and sisters when we do not see in them a brother and sister, when we not see the face of Jesus in them and treated them without respect, love, and when we do not care for them.
On the second reading of this Sunday Mass we heard that Jesus went to preach to the men and women who did not believe to Noah, Saint Peters tell us about this: “He (Jesus) was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark”.
So the word of God today as in the past generations is inviting us to repent and to believe because the Kingdom of God has come near. Repenting and believing in the message of Jesus are two fundamental things for our lives today.
